The Russian battalion congregated at a training area near the village of Trudovske in occupied eastern Ukraine when the two missiles struck, The BBC reported Wednesday. Sources familiar with the incident told the outlet that the soldiers were gathered to await the arrival of a senior commander. Ukraine has yet to comment on the strike, but the BBC reported a US-made HIMARS launch system was used to fire the two missiles. In August, Ukraine said it launched a HIMARS attack on five Russian units gathered on a beach that resulted in 200 casualties and destroyed equipment. Some accounts at the time suggested the troops had been gathered to await a general's pep talk before a dangerous mission.

Hundreds of stocks have broken the buck this year, following a slump in the once-hot market for buzzy startups seeking rapid growth. As of Friday, 557 stocks listed on U.S. exchanges were trading below $1 a share, up from fewer than a dozen in early 2021, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The majority of these stocks—464 of them—are listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, whose rules require companies to maintain a minimum share price of $1 or risk being delisted.

Sam Bankman-Fried is gone. And crypto is back to its favorite activity: a wild speculative rally. The FTX founder’s trial featured a parade of witnesses detailing a multibillion-dollar fraud at the heart of the crypto market. During the trial, crypto prices surged on optimism that U.S. regulators would allow an exchange-traded fund that holds bitcoin. Bitcoin is up more than 25% since the start of October and recently touched an 18-month high.

During his closing argument, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicolas Roos told jurors that almost a year ago, when thousands of people were trying to withdraw their money from the collapsing crypto exchange, their dread turned to despair.

Photo illustration: Annie ZhaoFTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried previewed a potential defense Thursday when he told a federal judge that he relied on the blessing of lawyers to make business decisions such as deleting communications and making loans to himself, actions that prosecutors said allowed him to commit the crimes that led to the implosion of his crypto exchange. Bankman-Fried, on trial for fraud, money laundering and other offenses, had been expected to testify in front of a Manhattan federal jury on Thursday afternoon. Instead, in what amounted to an unusual practice session after the jury was dismissed for the day, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan required the FTX founder to walk through several subjects that were in dispute so the judge could rule on what Bankman-Fried could say to jurors.

Bankman-Fried will likely testify over Thursday and Friday, Cohen said. Federal prosecutors said they would rest their case Thursday morning.
